Electric Linear Actuators in Solar Tracking and Agriculture

From:Changzhou Louis Electric Push Rod Co., Ltd.  Time:2026/9/23 10:01:41  HIts:

Panels that follow the sun from east to west, poultry-house curtains that open and close twice a day, greenhouse vents that lift when the temperature climbs: most of these sites sit in fields or on rooftops, with no compressed air and no electrician on standby. The equipment has to move by itself and survive dust, rain, snow and heat. That is where an electric linear actuator earns its place.

1. Why agriculture and renewable energy prefer actuators

These installations share three traits: scattered mounting points, unattended operation and limited power. An actuator needs only a DC supply to move. There is no compressor or air line to freeze, and no hydraulic oil that can leak into soil. For a farm or a solar plant, that counts for more than precision.

2. Solar tracking: the classic application

Single-axis trackers usually calculate the sun's angle from latitude, longitude and time, then drive an actuator to keep the modules facing the light. A solar tracker actuator stays outdoors all year: wide temperature swings, night condensation and abrasive dust. Check the IP rating, temperature range and self-locking ability: self-locking holds the array against wind load so panels are not pushed off angle.

3. Doors and curtains on livestock farms

Ventilation curtains, insulated covers and dung doors in poultry and pig houses used to be opened by hand or chain hoist. With an actuator they can follow temperature, humidity or light sensors: curtains open at midday and close again in the evening. Actuators also suit passage doors in cattle, sheep and poultry sheds, timed or remote-controlled for morning and evening grazing. These moves happen a few times a day, yet they decide barn climate and animal stress.

4. Four things to get right outdoors

First, protection: choose a higher IP rating and coatings for salt spray or fertilizer dust. Second, surge protection: keep controllers and power supplies under cover, and route signal cable away from power cable. Third, freezing: snow and ice can jam a curtain or vent, so the logic needs overload detection that stops and backs off. Fourth, travel limits: add software stroke protection on top of the mechanical stops so a rod is never driven hard against its end. These points fail most often on farm automation actuators, and can be settled at the drawing stage.

5. Control and power

Two schemes dominate. One actuator with its own controller, fed by a photocell or timer, moves a single point cheaply and keeps the failure footprint small. A PLC or IoT gateway schedules many points and reports status remotely. For power, plants and greenhouses often already have a DC bus; remote sites can run from a PV panel and battery, but account for cloudy-day autonomy and cold-weather capacity loss.

6. Specification checklist

Provide the motion type, straight push-pull or curtain winding; stroke and travel time; load, including wind and snow; cycles per day and whether self-locking is required; supply voltage and mounting space; IP rating and ambient temperature. A proper automatic door actuator for sheds is chosen on noise and self-locking, not maximum thrust. LOUIE Electric Linear Actuator matches thrust and protection to tracker, curtain and gate duties, supplies installation guidance, and supports multi-unit synchronization and remote control.

7. Conclusion

Agricultural and renewable-energy equipment does not need to be complicated, only dependable. An actuator turns “someone walks out and opens it every day” into “the machine moves on schedule”, while keeping installation and service simple. Decide the cycle rate, the environment and the available power first, then set thrust, stroke and IP rating. LOUIE Electric Linear Actuator has handled many such outdoor duties.
