Electric Linear Actuator Problems: Heat, Noise and Short Lifespan

From:Changzhou Louis Electric Push Rod Co., Ltd.  Time:2026/9/15 10:01:10  HIts:

After long service, an electric linear actuator may run hotter, sound louder or last less than expected. In most cases the cause is not poor quality in the unit itself, but a mismatch between working conditions, selection and mounting. This article reviews the three symptoms, heat, noise and short lifespan, and gives maintenance steps you can apply immediately.

1. Separate normal warming from real overheating

Coils and gearboxes always generate heat, so a housing slightly warmer than ambient is normal. But if the unit becomes too hot to touch after a short run, or temperature keeps climbing without settling, treat it as an actuator fault and investigate rather than running it harder.

2. Heat: check duty cycle, then load and cooling

The most common cause is using an intermittent-duty actuator in continuous operation. Ratings usually state a duty cycle percentage, for example 25 percent means one minute of running in every four. Exceed that ratio for long periods and losses generate heat faster than the housing can dissipate it. The second cause is excess load, including real resistance above rated force plus impact and offset loads during reversing. The third is cooling conditions: an actuator inside a closed cabinet, wrapped in insulation or installed in a hot area loses margin quickly. Check duty cycle first, measure the running current, then review mounting and ambient temperature.

3. Noise: listen in three places

Listen by location. First, the motor and gearbox: worn gears, insufficient grease or loose assembly clearance produce continuous humming or periodic clicking. Second, the screw and nut: dried grease, dust on the screw or increased clearance from wear causes intermittent friction noise. Third, mounting and guidance: a loose pivot bracket, play in the pin, or inadequate guidance that lets side load reach the actuator produces rattling and knocking. To locate the source, run the actuator with the load removed. If noise remains unloaded, the problem is internal. If it is quiet unloaded and noisy only under load, mounting stiffness or alignment is the likely cause.

4. Short lifespan: usually selection or usage

Short life shares a few patterns: selecting by peak force instead of continuous rated force and running near the limit, no guidance so the actuator absorbs side load, an ingress protection rating that does not match the environment, and stroke use that keeps the unit against its end stops. Recalculating ratings for continuous duty, adding guidance and raising the IP rating usually improve service life noticeably.

5. Six maintenance steps

Maintenance is simple as long as it is scheduled. Check mounting bolts and pins for looseness. Replenish or replace the specified grease on schedule and never mix two different greases. Clean the screw and housing, shortening the interval in dusty plants and adding a bellows boot when needed. Respect the duty cycle and avoid long periods of full load. Watch running current and temperature and stop for inspection when a trend changes. Finally, run long-idle units unloaded a few cycles to prevent grease settling and seal sticking.

6. Conclusion

Heat, noise and short lifespan all point to one habit: telling the supplier your real duty cycle, load, mounting method and environment. Changzhou LOUIE Electric Linear Actuator helps calculate duty cycle and continuous force at the selection stage and offers models with position feedback for frequent start-stop duty. When an exception appears on site, LOUIE Electric Linear Actuator engineers can help locate it by comparing loaded and unloaded behaviour, cutting downtime.
